the rhythm of the neighborhood...

is amazing and beautiful to me…

it is amazing to wake up to the sunrise, sometimes softly, sometimes with a slap in the face as it wakes us...

the roosters (plural) and the turkey next door dont bother me at all..they make me smile every time i hear them...even if it is 4:00 in the morning...signals the start of another lucky day here on la isla...(i love it when i am driving down the road and a chicken crosses in front of me...makes me chuckle inside...and sometimes out loud...)

then we get to watch the street come alive…

folks getting ready for church on a sunday morning or getting ready for work on a monday morning or getting ready for school...

vendors begin their parade up and then down the street selling pastries, cocos, tortillas, fruits usually a bit too early for my tastes around 7:00 or so…and lasts into the evening...

You begin to hear music from the different houses…american blues to traditional mexican dance music...i love it all...

our welder neighbor begins his day early…and will work late into the evening…and usually 7 days a week while working in the street in front of his house…

folks begin walking to “the water lady” to get drinks and snacks and water…

the guy down the street always seems to be building something, but I cannot see what it is, it is behind his house…sometimes the constant hammering I hear on the cement from my neighbors can be annoying (like at siesta time), but other times I think it is pretty cool, that no matter how long they hammer, they do it until it is completed…without complaining…and they just keep on hammering away…and sometimes I wonder if when some of my neighbors get bored, they just start hammering on cement to feel like they are getting something done…if they take the trash out, they hammer on cement, need to change a light bulb well, then it it’s time to hammer on cement…getting ready for church?  time to hammer on cement…I doubt it is true, but it sure seems like that sometimes…

over the weekend, not far away, i walk to my attorney’s office in the constant shuffle of paperwork…geez mexican people LOVE paperwork…his name is Antonio and he is Freddy’s son (from Freddy’s restaurant)…Antonio asked Freddy to sign for my FM3 and of course he did, cause they all love to help out any way they can for anyone they can…

i see my friends that I have come to know in the neighborhhod…Lori and Polo from the Mango, Ricardo in the Ronco where I buy some fresh OJ, then a quick stop and chat with Zowie as I inquire about her lemonade stand set up outside the Mango…

then I just had no choice, i had to stop by the blue iguana and pick up a cinnamon roll...

then I see a friend rides by on a scooter, with a little beep of the horn and smile and a waive…

in just one or two blocks, i see so many people that i know and that i work with or buy from and we have all become neighbors and friends, where everyone helps each other with breakfast, car problems, FM3 questions, groceries, lost keys...

in a quick ten minutes I see and waive hello to Ramiro, Ron, Oscar, Luis, Polo, Lori, Zowie, Antonio, Carolyn, Ricardo and a couple of kids on the street…

i see folks having breakfast at the mango, coffee at the blue iguana, driving by on their way to work or the beach or doing Saturday morning chores…

and I hear the music and laughter and see smiles and handshakes and friendly waves…

i make it back to the house to enjoy the delicious cinnamon roll and enjoy the rhythm of the waves in the water…they are relentless and relaxing, powerful and soothing…

we are fortunate to live on the 2nd level and can watch the sunset from the kitchen and the front deck…sometimes stunning, sometimes simple, but nonetheless, we cannot stop it or start it…we just watch it unfold and the end of the day is near…

as Sunday evening rolls around, you can hear the music in the street begin to wind down…this is such a quiet neighborhood and a quiet street…by 9:00, all is quiet…and will stay that way until the sun rises and we start the rhythm of the neighborhood all over again…

monday morning…time to go to work…and watch the neighborhood come alive again…

while some folks watch tv in the evenings, we like to just sit out on the front deck and watch folks come and go on the street...it all sounds so simple...and it is...and that is just how i like it...

disfruta la vida…
